Entering Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, involves navigating specific entry requirements set by the government. All foreign nationals require a visa or travel authorization to enter the country, with few exceptions. The immigration process upon arrival can be stringent, and officials often meticulously check documents. Travelers should ensure all paperwork, including proof of accommodation, return/onward tickets, and sufficient financial means, is in perfect order before arrival to avoid potential denial of entry. It's important to apply for the correct visa well in advance of travel, as on-arrival visas are not typically available for most nationalities.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Equatorial Guinea requires visas for nearly all foreign visitors. The process has modernized with an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for many nationalities, but some must still obtain a traditional visa from an embassy.

Visa-Free Entry
Varies

Only citizens of a very limited number of neighboring African countries may enter without a visa.

Includes
Cameroon (for specific border regions) Gabon (for specific border regions)

Visa-free entry is extremely limited and typically applies only to border residents with special permits. All other travelers require authorization.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Typically 30 or 90 days, single entry.

Citizens of many countries can apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization, which is a pre-approved entry document.

Includes
United States United Kingdom European Union member states Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa China India Many others
How to Apply: Apply via the official Equatorial Guinea eVisa portal. Processing usually takes 3-5 business days. Approval must be obtained before travel.
Cost: Approximately 100-150 USD, depending on nationality and processing speed.

The ETA is mandatory for eligible nationalities. You must print the approval and present it to immigration. An ETA is not a visa stamp but grants permission to receive a visa on arrival at the port of entry.

Visa Required
Determined by the embassy, typically 30-90 days.

Nationalities not eligible for the ETA must apply for a traditional visa at an Equatorial Guinean embassy or consulate.

How to Apply: Submit application in person or via an authorized agent to the nearest embassy. Requires an invitation letter, hotel reservations, flight itinerary, bank statements, and application forms. Processing can take several weeks.

Embassies are few globally, so planning far in advance is essential. Some travelers may need to apply through an embassy in a neighboring country.

Pets require an import permit obtained in advance from the Ministry of Agriculture. A valid veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel and proof of current rabies vaccination are mandatory. Quarantine may be required.

Extended Stays

To stay longer than your visa allows, you must apply for an extension at the Dirección General de Migración (General Directorate of Immigration) in Malabo well before your current visa expires.
