Malabo Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the nearest Equatorial Guinea embassy or consulate before traveling, as entry requirements can change without notice.
Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, is located on the island of Bioko and serves as the main international gateway to the country. Entry requirements for Equatorial Guinea are relatively strict, and most foreign nationals require a visa to enter the country. The immigration process can be thorough, and travelers should ensure all documentation is in order before departure as visa requirements are strictly enforced. Visitors to Malabo should be prepared for a comprehensive entry process that includes immigration checks, health screenings, and customs inspections. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers, and proof of vaccination must be presented upon arrival. The country uses the Central African CFA franc (XAF) as its currency. It's highly recommended to arrange all necessary visas and documentation well in advance of travel, as obtaining a visa on arrival is generally not possible for most nationalities. Equatorial Guinea's tourism infrastructure is still developing, and the country primarily receives business travelers related to the oil and gas industry. English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese are official languages, though Spanish is most widely spoken in Malabo. Travelers should register with their embassy upon arrival and maintain copies of all important documents throughout their stay.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Equatorial Guinea has restrictive visa policies, and most foreign nationals require a visa to enter the country. Visa-free entry is very limited, and the visa application process typically requires an invitation letter or proof of hotel reservation.

Visa-Free Entry
Up to 90 days

Very few nationalities enjoy visa-free access to Equatorial Guinea

Includes
Member states of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) for short stays

Even ECCAS citizens may need to register with local authorities. Visa-free access is extremely limited and subject to bilateral agreements. Most travelers will require a visa regardless of nationality.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eVisa)
Typically 30-90 days depending on visa type

Equatorial Guinea has introduced an electronic visa system, though it is not available for all nationalities

Includes
Selected nationalities may apply online - availability varies Check with the official eVisa portal for eligibility
How to Apply: Applications must be submitted through the official Equatorial Guinea eVisa portal at least 7-10 business days before travel. Applicants need a valid passport, passport photo, flight itinerary, hotel reservation or invitation letter, and yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Cost: Approximately $100-$150 USD for tourist visa, higher for business visas

The eVisa system is relatively new and not all nationalities are eligible. Processing times can vary. An invitation letter from a host in Equatorial Guinea or confirmed hotel reservation is typically required.

Visa Required (Embassy Application)
30-90 days depending on visa type

Most nationalities must apply for a visa at an Equatorial Guinea embassy or consulate before travel

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Equatorial Guinea embassy or consulate. Required documents typically include: valid passport (6+ months validity), completed application form, passport photos, invitation letter from host or company in Equatorial Guinea, proof of accommodation, flight itinerary, yellow fever vaccination certificate, and proof of sufficient funds. Processing time is typically 5-15 business days but can take longer.

This applies to most nationalities including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, most EU countries, and others. An invitation letter is almost always required. Business travelers need a letter from their employer and the inviting company. Visa on arrival is generally not available. Some embassies may require applicants to appear in person.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Malabo International Airport (SSG), travelers will go through immigration, health screening, and customs. The process can be thorough and time-consuming, so patience is advised. All documents should be readily accessible.

1
Health Screening
First checkpoint involves health screening where you must present your yellow fever vaccination certificate. This is mandatory and non-negotiable. Temperature checks and other health screenings may also be conducted.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, visa, and completed arrival card to immigration officers. Officers may ask questions about your visit. Ensure all visa documentation is in order as immigration officials are strict about compliance.
3
Passport Stamping
If everything is in order, your passport will be stamped with an entry stamp indicating your permitted duration of stay. Verify the dates are correct before leaving the counter.
4
Baggage Claim
Collect your luggage from the baggage claim area. Malabo International Airport is relatively small, so this process is usually straightforward.
5
Customs Declaration
Pass through customs where you may need to declare items. Bags may be inspected. Have your customs declaration form completed and ready.
6
Final Exit
After clearing customs, you'll exit into the arrivals area where you can arrange transportation to your accommodation.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) in Spanish or English, including contact information and authorizing the child to travel. Birth certificates may also be requested. Children require yellow fever vaccination if over 9 months old. If traveling with children who are not your own, additional documentation proving guardianship or authorization may be required. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents.

Traveling with Pets

Pets entering Equatorial Guinea require: valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, proof of rabies vaccination (administered at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months prior), import permit from Equatorial Guinea Ministry of Agriculture (arrange through your sponsor or hotel before travel), and microchip identification is recommended. Pets must be examined upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Quarantine may be required. Contact the Equatorial Guinea embassy well in advance as requirements are strict and documentation must be in order. Consider that veterinary care in Malabo is very limited.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas are typically valid for 30-90 days. For stays exceeding your visa validity, you must apply for an extension through the Dirección General de Migración before your visa expires. Extensions require sponsorship from a local entity or individual, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, and may require additional fees. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation. For long-term stays, consider applying for a residence permit, which requires sponsorship from an employer or family member, extensive documentation, and approval from immigration authorities. Work permits are separate from visas and required for any employment. Business travelers on extended projects should ensure their company handles visa extensions and work permits. Never overstay your visa - penalties are severe.

Business Travelers

Business travelers require a business visa, which necessitates an invitation letter from the host company in Equatorial Guinea including details of the business relationship, purpose and duration of visit, and guarantee of financial responsibility. Additional requirements include a letter from your employer stating purpose of travel, proof of business registration, and sometimes proof of business relationship between companies. Business visas may be single or multiple entry. For extended business stays or work, a work permit is required in addition to the visa. Keep all business documentation accessible during your stay.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, photographers, and media personnel require special authorization and press credentials to work in Equatorial Guinea. Apply through the Ministry of Information, Press, and Radio well in advance. Unauthorized journalism or photography, especially of government buildings, military installations, or infrastructure, is illegal and can result in arrest and equipment confiscation. Even tourists should be very cautious about photography. Always seek permission before photographing people or any official buildings.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Malabo International Airport who remain in the international transit area and continue their journey on the same day generally do not require a visa. However, if you need to collect baggage, change terminals, or leave the airport, you will need a transit or tourist visa. Confirm transit visa requirements with your airline and the Equatorial Guinea embassy as policies can vary. Keep all onward travel documentation accessible.
